THE SCHOONER YANKEE
(To the Editor.)
Sir,—iOn the illustration page of Monday's "Post" there was published a photogisaph of a yacht described as the schoontar Yankee, which was recently detaineld'. at Pitcairn Island by the illness oOiher crew. lam sure that in the interests of accuracy you will be glad topknow that the vessel depicted in the photograph is not the schooner Yankee,.; but a J class sloop of the same name, originally built to defend the Amprica Cup contests against Sir Thomas VLipton's Shamrock V, although in the tavent she was not selected as the official defender. The yacht is now owned lf>K a New York yachtsman, Mr. Gerard 33. Lambert, who took her to England|last season to compete against | similar 'Loats there, and your photograph s'fiows her arriving at (I think) Plymouth after her voyage across the Atlantic; She is equipped with a temporary jßawl rig for the purpose of the trip, as $he is designed for racing, and is unintended and quite unsuited for ocean cruising. The veWsel referred to in the message from Imcairn Island is a sturdy, schooner figged boat which has already cruised ibnany thousands of miles in Americain! waters. Perhaps we shall have the of seeing her in New I Zealand iui due course.—l am, etc. ' ; ' W. P. ROLLINGS.
