WINTRY WEATHER
COLD AND CHANGEABLE
Special forecast for Wellington:— Variable winds at first, but later moderate to strong southerlies setting in again. Weather still cold and changeable, with rain at times and possibly some hail. ■ The general forecast for the Dominion as a whole, issued at noon today, is for south-westerly to southerly winds prevailing. These will be moderate to strong generally and at times will increase in force. The weather will still be cold and changeable, with showers at times in most districts, more especially southward from Kawhia and Castlepoint. . , ■ Following the passage eastward of a rather deep depression, one of a series of secondaries which have been crossing the Dominion, winds since last night have become- south-westerly in direction over most of the Dominion. Their force generally has been moderate to strong, with gales at times on parts of the East Coast as far north as Cook Strait. The weather has been changeable with showers in most districts, and last night there were some rather heavy falls in the coastal areas of the South Island, some of the ranges receiving a coating of snow. There was a considerable, drop in temperatures last night. Auckland's weather yesterday was mostly fair with a west-south-west breeze, but a trace of rain fell during the afternoon. At 9 a.m. today,it was fine and clear with a light southwesterly wind. Wellington had a strong and squally norfti-westerly wind. Some light rain fell early in the day and most o£ the morning was cloudy. There was bright .sunshine, however, during most of the afternoon, the day's tally being seven hours. About 7.30 p.m. the wind turned to the south and within the next two hours temperatures fell as much as 14 degrees. Between 8.30 p.m. and 11.30 p.m. steady rain fell, the fall recorded at Kelburn being one of 32 points. In Christchurch it was practically calm yesterday morning with intermittent sunshine. The afternoon, however, was overcast and later in the day a fresh south-westerly wind sprang up, this' being accompanied by showers of rain or hail. The night was very cold, and at 9 a.m. today the weather was overcast with a gentle south-westerly breeze. The rainfall totalled 22 points. Dunedin's weather was cold and boisterous, frequent showers, totalling 2!) points of rain, during both the day and night accompanying a strong south-westerly wind. A wesl-:south-wcsterly gale was blowing there this morning and the sky was overcast.
