BARRIER CONTROL

CHAMPIONSHIP COURSE

The annual report of the Wellington Harrier Sub-committee was approved for discussion at a meeting last night of the sub-committee. Mr. R. M. Watterson presided. It was decided to recommend to the annual meeting that the harrier season should be opened at Lyall Bay on April 3. The annual meeting was fixed for March 23. The report comments on the necessity for obtaining a course for the provincial championships. A special subcommittee recommended that efforts should be made to get a course at Silverstream,' as the'Hutt Park and Lyall Bay courses would probably not- be available. " "In order to improve the standard of harrier running, in the province to'regain provincial honours, an endeavour was made last season to bring together the leading runners from the various clubs in order that they might train together," the report continues. "While the main purpose for which the move was made was not achieved, our representatives not faring too well at .Auckland, it is considered that the idea is a good one, and should be persevered with. A proper schedule of training, if adhered to by all, should prove beneficial to all, and more particularly to the younger runners. "In conclusion, we feel that during the past season the harrier movement in this province has again made steady improvement, and is progressing along sound lines. We now have a definiteset of rules to work to, these rules having been approved by the centre in a spirit of helpfulness and harmony. In addition, we have endeavoured, and we think successfully, to maintain that happy relationship between the centre and the harrier sub-committee so essential to the growth of both bodies. We feel a deeper understanding is apparent between the clubs themselves, which is making for git-eater unity in the movement. We feel sure that if: the spirit in the movement existing today is maintaind our sport will continue to grow until it becomes nationally known and popular."
