HUTT TECHNICAL COLLEGE

The monthly report of the principal of the Hutt Valley Memorial Technical College shows that the enrolments for the current year for the day classes were slightly higher than for 1936. The enrolled pupils show a preponderance of boys over girls—6o per cent, and 40 per cent. In the evening classes there was an increase of about 25 per cent, the figures being 430 as against 325 for 1936. Of these 364 were boys and 66 girls. Owing to the late opening of the classes, the accountancy classes showed diminished numbers, as students had evidently joined private coaching classes, which commenced earlier. New classes had been formed in advanced electrical engineering, electric wiring, workshop, mechanical drawing, and practical mathematics, cookery, crafts, drawing and design. The classes for the associate membership and studentship examinations of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers had been further developed. The results obtained at the Plumbers' Registration Board examination had been particularly good. The report was adopted by the board of managers last evening. Part-time instructors were appointed for the. electrical wiring class, the junior English and arithmetic classes, and five positions in mechanical drawing and four positions in mathematics and mechanics were filled, some of the positions being subject to satisfactory interviews. Metters (N.Z.), Ltd., were thanked for a donation of £2 2s to the college funds.
