THE NUFFIELD GIFT
NO GRANTS TO INDIVIDUALS
The Mayor, Mr. T. C. A. Hislop, has yesterday and today received a positive deluge of applications from individuals for assistance from the gift made to the city by Lord Nuffield, but, of course, cannot entertain such individual applications, for the terms under which Lord Nuffleld made his gift are that1 the funds are to be utilised for the furthering of the work of charitable and welfare institutions only. Therefore individuals who make application in person or by letter cannot be other than disappointed, and the Mayor is put to the unnecessary and unpleasant duty of refusing such appeals. He has no option in this matter, for the terms of the gift are clear. Those institutions and organisations who wish to do so must make their applications for a share of the gift by Monday next, otherwise they cannot be- considered, as Mr. Hislop proposes to announce the decision upon the allocation of the fund early in the coming week.
