Light to moderate and variable winds, but southerlies soon prevailing and freshening. Weather mainly fair, but changeable, and some showers still likely.

Temperatures becoming cooler

The general forecast '■ for the Dominion as a whole, issued at noon to--day, is for moderate north-westerly winds at first in the northern and north-eastern districts of the North Island, whilst elsewhere winds will be westerly to southwesterly in direction. Southerlies will gradually become general, and later will freshen. The weather will be cool and changeable with showers at times in most districts, more especially south of New Plymouth and Castlepoint. Conditions, however, will improve tomorrow.

, Several depressions of the westerly type crossed the Dominion during the weekend, and one is at present passing eastward off the Dominion. The latter, however, is being followed by a slight secondary, and an anticyclone is advancing across the Tasman Sea. Moderate to strong north-westerly to westerly winds have predominated, and gale force has been reached at times in places about and to the south of Cook Strait. In the southern portion of the South Island the wind has occasionally turned to the south-west. Unsettled weather with intermittent rain has been experienced in western districts from Taranaki southward and in the far south, and in the South Island there have been some rather heavy' falls of rain. In eastern areas and in the northern half of the North Island the weather has been mostly fair and w.ann, but since Sunday night scattered showers have been reported from the east coast of the South Island and from the Auckland Province.

Auckland's weather on Saturday was fair and warm with a light wind from between the south-east and north-east. Some light rain fell on Saturday night, and Sunday's weather was cloudy, with a west-south-west breeze. It was still cloudy at 9 a.m. today. In Wellington on Saturday it was fine and sunny, although a strong and squally north-westerly wind blew throughout the day, and 10.3 hours of bright sunshine were recorded. Sunday's weather was changeable and at times threatening, but there were intervals of sunshine, the day's tally of bright sunshine being 7.5 hours. A few light showers fell in the morning, Ejnd a strong and squally north-westerly wind persisted, the maximum gust being one at 8.45 p.m., with a velocity of 60 miles an hour. It rained last night between 2.15 a.m. and 3 a.m., after which the wind decreased in force. The rainfall at Kelburn totalled four points. ' l Christchurch had a strong north-west-erly wind on Saturday, the weather being warm and fair to cloudy. By Sunday morning the wind had changed to the south-west, but it soon .veered again to the north and the weather was mostly overcast. At 9 a.m. today it was cloudy with a gentle southeasterly wind. ci~ In Dunedin the weather on Saturday morning was fine with a northerly breeze, but just after noon the wind changed to the south and the sky rapidly clouded over. Rain fell in the afternoon and evening, 27 points being recorded. Sunday was a dull day with a light northerly wind, and again rain fell in the afternoon and at night, the fall being olie of 25 points. This morning a strong south-westerly wind was blowing, and was being accompanied by showers.

The Prime Minister (the Rt. Hon. M.J. Savage) left Wellington last night on' his northern tour, which will embrace Auckland, Waikalo, Rotorua, and Palmerston North. He will return to Wellington on March 17. .
