DAMAGES AWARDED
AGAINST COUNTY COUNCIL
Damages,amounting to £390 0s 4d were awarded by a jury of twelve in the Supreme Court last night to Emily Annie Freeman, a ladies' toilet specialist, of Wellington, who claimed £1123 5s from the Eketahuna County Council. The hearing of the case occupied three days and the jury was out for about three hours, returning with an assessment of £27 4s 6d special and £363 Os lOd general damages. The plaintiff's claim arose from theskidding and overturning of. a motorcar in which she was a passenger near Hamua on March 22 last. She alleged that the accident was caused by the negligence of the county council, for which a firm of contractors had. recently tar-sealed the road. She alleged that she had suffered a wrist injury and would be permanently disabled. The defence alleged negligence on the part of the driver of the car. .. Mr. Justice Smith presided. Mr. O. C. Mazengarb, and Mr. J.. M. Laing, of Masterton, appeared for the plaintiff, and Mr. H. F. O'Leary, K.C., and Mr. P. S. Page, of Eketahuna,'conducted the case for the county council.
