FUTURE OF FARMING

IRRIGATION'S PART

SOUTH ISLAND PROBLEM

(By Telegraph—l'ret... Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. The future of farming in the South Island may be determined in a large measure by the development of irrigation, according to the Minister of Agriculture (the Hon. W. L. Martin), who has just completed a tour of inspection of the irrigation areas.

The. Minister, in an interview today, said that present knowledge pointed to the use of sheep rather than dairy cattle, on account of the severity of the winters and the shortness of the season. "Irrigation," the Minister added, "will bring special problems- not now existent in districts with a low rainfall. Natural fertility may be very high, but the action of water will tend to exhaust this and manuring will in time become inevitable."

Mr. Martin expressed concern at the spread of-noxious weeds and gorse. He said it was now so bad in some parts that afforestation was the only remedy.
