A GOOD FINISH

<MAZIR AT TE AROHA

TRAY BIT THE FAREWELL

(By Telegraph.) (Special trom "Early Bird.")

AUCKLAND, March 1,

The weather was fine and there was a large attendance, at the, second day of the.Te Aroha Jockey Club's Meeting. Mazir had a good win in the principal event, the President's Handicap. Kilonsa, the favourite, just got home from. High Tea in the Piako Jubilee Handicap. The totalisator investments were £38,088 10s, an increase of £9337 on the second day last year. The total for the meeting was £91,658 10s, an increase of £2a,387 on last year. -

After his good run into fourth place on Saturday, .Erination improved to win the Manawaru Hurdles and pay a win dividend of nearly a score. Modern Maid made the pace in the initial stages, but.at the five■ furlongs Erination made an effort and went to' the front, the event then'resolving itself into a procession,' for he was always several lengths clear, and he -, won easing up. There was a good tussle for the minor places, High Quality beating Pango and Modern Maid, but Sandy Dix might have been second had he not bungled' the penultimate fence. Tudor.was prominent most of the way, and Euaform was done with early. Tout le Monde was'in the ruck all the way. Pirate King was sorted out as a good thing in the Elstow Handicap, and he scored very easily. He.got to the front early, and led Melvanui and Taro to the straight. Pirate ■ King ran about at the distance, and once straightened up again he went -on to win on the bit. His waywardness today was a repetition of his performance at Te Rapa. but he is a fine gallpper, and should add .to his record shortly.1 Melvanui went his best race :to date, and after Taro appeared to head him inside the distance he tame on again. Taro shaped well once more, and there is still plenty of room for improvement. Young Paddon was running on in fourth place, and his consistenc3 r may soon be rewarded. Haile Boy, Racing Lady, and Very Glad, shaped best of the others. Bronzette went well after being last early, but Miss Te Koura was disappointing. ■ \ HUNTINGMOKE'S SECOND WIN.' Huntingmore completed a double when he again scored in the two-year-old race, his effort being marked by courage. He was always in front, being followed to the straight by Trilliarch, Aiwai, Royal Vaals, and Pantoon. Just below the distance . Trilliarch had his head in front of Huntingmore, but he. made his effort a bit too. soon and he did not go. on with it. Aiwai's finish was delayed and she was within a head of Huntingmore at the judge, while Trilliarch was a good third. Pantoon ran his best race to date to finish'fourth, and; Royal Vaals, who had every chance, failed to run up to her previous efforts. .'. Forest Acre did not do. so well as in his start on the opening day and Airam was so erratic that the starter finally ignored her. Huntingmore has come very solid and he is going to develop into a good sprinter. Aiwai's effort was that of a good filly. . KELONSA GETS HOME. Kilonsa made, amends for her ill luck the first day when.she captured the Piako Jubilee Handicap, but it: was a hectic finish, with High Tea challenging hotly in the final furlong. Mungacre was the pacemaker to .the' turn, where Kilonsa was right up ■ and so was Supreme Court, with High Tea in-a handy position and Pukeko last.' Kilonsa was doing it best as soon as heads were turned for home and she and High Tea had the finish to themselves, ' Kilonsa . just .'getting , there. Pukeltb-did very well to get up third. King Neptune ran a fair race for fourth and Mungacre and Royal Secret headed the remainder. Kilonsa, will .still' be handily placed in middle-distance races and High Tea's showing will • bring him also into the reckoning. The unlucky horse.-was Pukeko.. - ■.::.':;.'.:

• ANOTHER.FINE FINISH. ;•; Another' dramatic 'finish: was staged in the principal race, the President's Handicap, in which Mazir got the last run and just won at double figures. Several horses suffered at the start, among them being Lagoon, Royal Dance, Loombinationi' and' Con Fuoco. The early leaders were Werohia and then Shy, the field .being well strung out at: the'five furlongs,, where Master Brierly was tailed off. Shy led across the top and into the straight from King Rey, Taitoru, Lagoon, Mazir, and Werohia, Two furlongs from home Shy: and King Rey led the bunch and they were fighting it out, soon to be joined by Scotland. Mazir started his "run from further back, and carrying it .'on brilliantly won by a neck from Shy. King Rey was "a head away, a neck in front of Scotland.- .Then came Taitoru, Tiger Gain, Gay Broney.and Werohia. It was a particularly"fine race, only a little less exciting, than.the big race on Saturday. Mazir was seen.at his best. He'waslying seventh on the rails when they•' entered; the 'b^ck stretch and on this occasion lie 'succeeded in holding his position; ■: Shy fought on well after King Rey seemed to have his measure below the distance. Scotland went an'even race. Tybalt, Werohia, and Taitoru had every-chance. Flood Tide never managed to get into the picture. Lagoon hung on gamely after a slow beginning. . . .A GOOD DIVIDEND. The lightweights Prince Rangi and Jack Tar had the finish of. the • Waivakau Hack > Handicap -to themselves, both being prominent'throughout.-'Val-spear tried to win: air the way and then weakened at the •.distance, to finish seventh. Prince Rangi and-Jack. Tar drew clear at the distance and the former displaced the promising Jack Tar to pay close on a score. Tosh did not receive a good-passage on the rails and struggled on for a moderate third. Winlona's fourth was good. Waitaka and Glenthawn did well in this company; ' - ■','.-. ■King'Theo displayed' marked improvement to. win the Morrinsville Hack Handicap in fine style. He was in fifth place making the home turn end at the bottom of .the straight was sandwiched ■■' between Raepata and Lady Siegfried, behind Huskie and Racette, and he fought his way out to the detriment of Lady Siegfried. Once he got clear King Theo went away, and although Huskie challenged again, King Theo won convincingly. International weakened into third place. Racette was a good fourth. The winner is going to be useful in handicap class outside the. main centres, for he stays' well. Huskie shaped • better than on Saturday and he willrace prominently when put' to hurdling - later in the, autumn. International was asked to- do too much and Lady Siegfried was unlucky in being bumped when about to begin her run. ■. : Tray Bit, one of the best sprinters in the province during the early spring fixtures, returned to form to win;- the sprint from Golden Sheila and Karl. Golden' Sheila revealed a glimpse of her speed but, lightly weighted as he. was, Tray Bit only had to be near his best to score.. .He was third into the. straight and he won narrowly but convincingly from a bunch comprising Golden,Sheila,-Karl, Johnny Walls, Impasto, and Diatomous, who finished vi that order at short-head intervals.
