THE NAVY LEAGUE

ENROLMENT 07 MEMBERS '

The citizens of Wellington and surrounding districts, not already members, are invited by advertisement in today's issue to join the Navy League, now at the beginning of another financial year. This body of British people throughout the Empire .has been in existence for 42 years, and has rendered valuable . assistance to Governments in keeping before the minds of the people the question of the defence of all parts of the Empire and its trade routes. ■ .

The British White Paper discloses an entirely new situation in Empire defence. The huge re-armament scheme involving the expenditure of £1,500,000,000 over a period of five years applies to Great Britain, her colonies and dependencies but not to her self-governing Dominions. The representatives of the Governments of these Dominions, after attendance at the Imperial Conference, where defence will overshadow all other questions, will submit their reports to their Governments and the latter will doubtless make known to the public their ■ plans for the defence of their particular Dominions It has been so clearly shown, states the league, that adequate defences are necessary in the cause of peace as well as for self-protection, that it will then be an evident duty of-all citizens to support the plans of its advisers in Parliament assembled. This support will surely be wholehearted and united and without dissent.

The Navy League asks that large numbers should enrol in it so that its influence may be enhanced and public opinion further strengthened in favour of adequate defence forces and particularly in the building of a very strong Navy.' The secretary of the league is in attendance at 212 Lambton Quay during ordinary office hours to enrol members, or subscriptions may be sent to P.O. Box 972, Wellington.
