MINES TO BE SWEPT

OFF SPANISH COAST

LONDON, February 27.

The naval correspondent of the "Daily Telegraph" says that as a result of the liner Llandovery Castle being either mined or torpedoed off the Spanish coast, British warships in the Mediterranean will operate paravanes with the intention of bringing mines to the surface so as to enable their destruction harmlessly.

War risk rates covering the French fleet trading in the Mediterranean have already risen to 10s per £100 for three

months. i ' The captain of the Llandovery Castle expresses the opinion that the ship struck either a mine or a torpedo. A column of water was flung up and passed over the foremast, which was broken.

A passenger says that shortly before the explosion an object resembling a periscope was seen by members of the crew. ;
