GIRL'S 400-MILE RIDE

(By Telegraph—Press Association.)

AUCKLAND, February 23,

Having ridden nearly 400 miles on horseback from Waikanae in search of employment in Auckland, Miss Iris Caiilton arrived here during the weekend. She made the journey in only 13 clays of riding, although she was actually three weeks on the way. Miss Caulton rode her own horse, Sergeant Brown, a 12-year-old thoroughbred, and averaged about 32 miles a day. She found accommodation at farmhouses on the way, and slept for two nights in empty houses. Farmers gave her grazing for her horse, and she estimates that the trip cost much less than the combined fares for herself and her horse. _ ■

Miss Caulton said when interviewed that the journey was uneventful, and her only adventure was when her horse fell into a bog-hole and managed to struggle out just in time.
