GOLD ROD BEATS CUDDLE

United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. MELBOURNE, February 28. The weather was fine and there was a large attendance at the first day of the V.R.C. Autumn Meeting at Flemington on Saturday. Boonewa improved on. recent form to win the Pines Hurdle Race, in which Soloist was never dangerous. Hua, who was bought as a yearling for 750 guineas, hadI'his -first success by winning in the last stride the Sires' Produce Stakes, giving his trainer, J. Scobie, his seventh win in this race. Caesar and Nightguard made good efforts, but Aj ax and Lochlee were disappointing. Birthday Boy was last. Cuddle made a great effort to lead all the way in the Essendon Stakes but was beaten in the last stride by the fast-finishing Gold Rod. Gay Blonde, who was last early, was a good third. Gold Rod has now won £10,315 in stake money. Aurie's Star led all the way in the Newmarket Handicap and withstood a strong challenge from Pamelus,. who has been runner-up in four big races in Victoria this season. Regular Bachelor was a good third. Country Party was never dangerous. Aurie's Star has now had nine wins in twelve starts. Peerage and Prince Quex passed the pacemaker, Boongarry, two furlongs from home in the St. Leger Stakes. In an exciting struggle Peerage won narrowly. The trainer, Lou .Robertson, won this race previously, witn Stu epok°o n'Ariki won* the Brunswick Stakes nicely from the consistent Mutable.
