"THREE SMART GIRLS."

St. James Theatre Ncxl Friday.

Charles Winninger, the corpulent comedian of Universal's "Show Boat," is one of the prominent stars of the latest picture released by the New Universal and coming-to the St. James Theatre on Friday next. In "Three Smart Girls" Winninger plays as Judson Craig, father of three very clever girls. , A divorced New York banker, Winninger is in love with a golddigging lady by the name of Precious (Binnie Barnes). She and her mercenary mother (played by Alice Brady, the nit-wit Mrs. Bullock of that comedy-scream "My Man Godfrey") are planning to lure their unsuspecting victim into a marriage and thus relieve him of his not inconsiderable fortune. But they took no account of the wiles of Craig's three daughters, who are in Switzerland when they hear of their father's planned re-, marriage. "Action front" is the motto of the girls. Borrowing 'their fare from their nurse, they sail for New York, to arrive at the crucial moment. Their combined efforts straighten out their father's romance, and' also ;the two elder girls find team-mates as a result of their crusade. The surprise o£ this picture is the youngest girl, Penny, played by a new star, Deanna Durbin. Only fourteen years old, this girl's mature lyric soprano voice has amazed musical experts in America. Pier voice is heard to great advantage in operatic and popular numbers in "Three Smart Girls.", The titles of two of her songs are "My Heart is Singing" arid "Someone to Care for Me."
