AMATEUR ATHLETICS

EVENTS AT THE BASIN

A HEAVY TRACK

But for the heavy rain of the last few days which left the track very soft, conditions were really good when the Wellington provincial track and field championships opened at the Basin Reserve • this morning. There was just a- light northerly. • It was hardly to be expected in view of the state of the track that fast times would, be returned, and figures recorded in the preliminaries, except in the case of one heat of the 220 yards, bore this out.

With the fine array of talent competing and the selection of the Wellington team to represent the province at the national championships dependent upon performances .made today, it was anticipated that, competition would be spirited, arid form in the heats pointed to keen tussles in. the finals.

The programme was so extensive that it was found necessary to make a start at 11 a.m. The entries, generally, were excellent, there being .in addition to a full local representation . teams from Wairarapa, Blenheim, and Nelson. . -In addition to the.contest for individual honours there."was also; the R. W. McVilly Shield competition between the various clubs, the trophy being awarded on a points basis. The Wellington Club are the. present holders. PROMISE OF CLOSE FINALS. The running in the heats ol the 100 yards, the first of which was won by V. Walker, a former Auckland champion, and the second by C. Robinson, the local furlong title-holder, gave promise of a particularly good final, as did also the preliminaries in the 220 yards, won by J. Watt, a former champion, A. Welply, and C. Robinson. R. Wade, formerly of' Hawfce's Bay, walked excellently in the three miles, to defeat very comfortably N. McCarthy, who recently transferred from Auckland. -In the 440 yards the placegetters were merely content to qualify, but it was expected that J. Watt, who is a definite .prospect 4or. the national quarter-mile title, would turn in a fine performance in the final. The running of J. Sutherland, the brilliant Waitaki High School sprinter, presaged something really good this afternoon. ' Proceedings this afternoon opened with a grand parade of athletes, led by the Wellington Police Highland Pipe Band. . ... ■ ". THE RESULTS.
