WORK IN TANGANYIKA

Mrs. G. A. Chambers, of Tanganyika, who will.arrive in Wellington on Monday en route to join her. husband in Christchurch, will only spend three days here. There will thus be very few opportunities of hearing her story of the work in Tanganyika. She is to speak at St. Cuthbert's Hall, Berhampore, on Tuesday afternoon, when Mrs. Holland, wife of the Bishop of Wellington, will preside. The aim of the work in Central Tanganyika is to develop side by side widespread evangelistic work, schools, and hospitals. In maternity and infant welfare work, and in the battle against leprosy, wonderful results have already been achieved. In spite of the difficulties to be contended within regard to trying climatic conditions, disease, and isolation, a magnificent work is being done by lady missionaries in that huge diocese of 200,000 square miles. Miss Ruby Lindsay, Nelson, is working there at present. In a booklet published on the work in Tanganyika it is stated, that "94 per cent, of the 6,000,000 people of Tanganyika are non-Christian. African girls are being trained as nurses at every hospital to spread the gospel of healing and :health throughout the country. Hundreds.of mothers and babies are saved in our hospitals every year. Antenatal and maternity clinics in the diocese are teaching hygiene, mothercraft, and baby welfare. The infant mortality of Tanganyika is from 60 to 80 per cent."
