The Minister of Railways (the Hon. D. G. Sullivan) left this afternoon for Palmerston North. This evening he will be the guest at a gathering of railwaymen, and tomorrow he will inspect the site of the Palmerston North deviation. On Monday the Minister will leave Wellington for a tour of the South Island railways. He will be Mr. John T. Gwynne, of Wellington, left for the south last evening. The Rev. F. A. Thompson, formerly of Northcote, has been appointed Presbyterian chaplain for a period of 12 months'to the public works camps on the East. Coast railway line. Mr. C. J. B. Norwood returned to Wellington from the south this, morning. Sir George Elliot arrived in Wellington this morning from the south. Mr. J. M. Hardcastle arrived from the south this morning. Mr. J. Mawson Stewart, of Christchurch, has been elected president of the New Zealand Society of Accountants and Mr. M. S. Spence, of Napier, vice-president. Their services as members of the society's council during a long period received high tributes at the annual meeting. A pleasant function arranged by the committee of the Wellington Drapers' and Boot Retailers' Association, was held this week, when Mr. A. P. Smith, managing director of James Smith, Ltd., was: entertained, at morning tea prior to his departure for England. Mr. H. O. Pittendrigh, who presided, made eulogistic reference to Mr. Smith's many services in the promotion of good feeling and cordial relationship between members of the trade in the Dominion. On behalf of the Wellington members, he presented Mr. Smitn with a gold pen and pencil. Mr. W. Simm and Mr. H. Smith also expressed the regard in which Mr. Smith was held by his trade associates. Mr. Smith, who is leaving by the Mataroa, will be accompanied by his wife, daughter, and two sons, and though his visit to England is mainly a pleasure one, the hope was expressed that he would attend one of the meetings of the important English Drapers' Chamber of Trade. Mr. Smith is this year's president of the New Zealand Federation of Drapers and Boot Retailers, and it was felt that value would accrue from his contact with, the important trade organisation in London. The following officers were elected at the annual meeting of the New. Zealand branch of the British Medical Association yesterday afternoon: — President-elect, Dr. J. P. S. Jamieson (Wellington); chairman of council, Dr. G. F. Anson (Wellington); executive, Drs. T. D. M. Stout, T. F. Corkill, H. E. Gibbs (Wellington); hon. general secretary, Dr P. P. Lynch (Wellington); editor of journal, Dr. S. D. Rhind (Wellington); members of council, Sir Donald McGavin (Wellington), Dr. J. Hardie Neil (Auckland), and another. Professor W. A. Sewell, of the Chair of English of the Auckland University and chairman of the professorial board, returned today by the Maunganui from Sydney, after attending a conference of universities of Australia and New Zealand at Adelaide.
