SUMMER SHOW

Flowers evidently thrive during a wet season, or so it appeared yesterday from the many fine blooms shown at the Horticultural Hail, Lower Hutt, in the gladioli and dahlia show of the Hutt Horticultural Society. Visitors from the Medical Conference in Wellington were present, and Lady Spriggs, herself a keen horticulturist, declared the show open.

Others of the official party were the president of the society, Captain Wybrants Olphert, and Mrs. Olphert, Dr. and Mrs. G. W. Harty, Dr. and Mrs.-T. D. M. Stout, Dr.! Gladioli and dahlias were naturally given pride of place on the stands, but there were many other lovely exhibits as well. Mr. C. H. Matthews was responsible for a beautiful display of begonias, grown in his own garden in Laings Road. These.wert for exhibition 'only, as was a collection of coloured hydrangea heads shown by Mr. Ashley Duncan.

In the absence of Mrs. A. R. Gower,! Miss C. A. Fraser. undertook the arrangement of the novelties stall, and achieved a strikh g effect with the many beautiful or curious exhibits. Australian and New Zealand bush i natives were much admired, as also was a combined vase of the blue-j flowered sea-holly and roral plant. Exhibits attracting attention were the, miniature violet-white cyclamen, with unusual coiled tendrils containing the seed pods, and the tiny rock gardens, arranged in shallow flower pots. , Massed hydrangeas in all colours ;\vere displayed by the Lower Hutt ; Borough Council, through the Reserves Department.' Mr. C. F. Pilcher's stall of ferns and dahlias was lost attractively arranged, the vases being fashioned of gilded branching bamboo stems fastened to pedestals. A-little-known dahlia shown was the "Freda," with curled dark copper petals. "Aladdin." ' After the long dearth cf entertainments for children in the Hutt Valley the pantomime "Aladdin" "vas greeted by an appreciative audience, largely composed of juveniles, when it was presented by Mr. Assheton Harbord in the King George Theatre at Lower Hutt Pupils of Mr. Joseph Knowsley appeared in the eight ballet numbers, the costuming for which reflected credit on the wardrobe mistresses, Mesdames Flavel and Rf"™^ JJ8 scenes, arranged by Mr. C. Brazier, struck the note of pantomime, and combined an Eastern atmosphere and nice blending" of colour.-with thei corn-. edy indispensable to such productions. Stage effects were in the hands of Mr. T E Lawson. 'Mr. F. M. Rcnner was stage manager and Mrs. F. R. Walker leader of the orchestra. The colour schemes ot the ballets were very effective, especially in the '^Wine Ballet," a rhythmic study in shades of wine and silver, and in "Slaves of the Lamp." in which the flamecosfumes combined with clever rlancine simulated fire.
