PETONE LOANS

THE OBJECTS IN VIEW

POLL ON MARCH 24

On Wednesday, ,March 24, several loan proposals will be placed 'before the ratepayers of Petone, and in this connection .a circular letter has been prepared by the Mayor (Mr. A. Scholeiiefld). The letter, which will be sent out at an early date, is as follows:—

"The reports dealing with the various loan proposals have been published in the Press from time to time, as have also the statutory advertisements. On behalf of the council I desire to make the position quite clear, so that there will be no misunderstanding in the minds of those person's entitled to vote upon the loan proposals.

: "Foreshore improvement loan of .£3500: The council has adopted a definite plan for the improvement of the foreshore, prepared by Mr. Keith Cook, architect, with a view to the work being completed out of revenue,, as funds permit. The plan has already been on view, and can be seen in the borough engineer's office at any time during office hours. The sum of £3500 is required to lay the foundation of the scheme, by building a central bathing pavilion (an attractive feature), and increasing facilities at McEwan Park as well as at the west end of the foreshore. In the beach the town has an unrivalled asset that needs to be developed to be self-supporting. The extra revenue received from the facilities provided is estimated to offset the interest and loan redemption charges.

"McKenzie baths loan of £750: At the present time the only dressing accommodation available to the users of the McKenzie baths is two small children's sheds. Adults and children have been using the same accommodation, and in the opinion of the council it is necessary in the interest of the children's morals that such a state must not continue. The sum of £750 is required to provide adequate accommodation, and jt is intended to utilise the old grandstand upon the Recreation Ground for this purpose.

"The material from the stand will be used in the building of accommodation on the northern side of the baths, with the twofold purpose of serving the users of McKenzie baths as well as North Park. The only accommodation at present upon North Park is a totally inadequate small tin.shed.

"Recreation Ground improvement loan of £5000: The sum of £5000 is required to provide a new grandstand upon the Recreation Ground in place of the present obsolete stand. The new stand will seat approximately 1500 persons, with up-to-date accommodation underneath for players, referees, and the St. John Ambulance. The present cycle track does not permit of a Rugby ground running north and south to be parallel with the grandstand, and it is to be altered accordingly. A new entrance, at. Kirk's Avenue is to be erected in such a manner as to add to the inside area of the Recreation Ground. It is anticipated that approximately £150 will be collected by way of revenue from the stand to offset the interest and loan redemption charges of £300 per annum.

"It is deemed advisable to forward a copy of this statement to every householder in the town, although only ratepayers and their wives are entitled to vote upon the loan proposals.

"Ratepayers have an opportunity on Wednesday, March 24, by voting for the proposals, to provide the up-to-date facilities worthy of a progressive borough.

"The increase in the rates for such a purpose will be so slight as to be hardly noticeable upon the rate demand.

"Do not let the loans be defeated by your failing to vote. Be sure to vote."
