TO ENSURE PEACE
NATIONS MUST TRADE CORDELL HULL'S OPINION WASHINGTON, January 23. The Secretary of State, Mr. Cordell Hull, in an interview with the Australian Associated Press, expressed great pleasure at the reported intention of Australia to establish a Legation at Washington, America, he said, welcomed new representations to this great centre of international activities, and stressed the fact that inter-com-munication among the nations strengthened the movement for world peace. "America, in the last four years, has striven mightily to aid peace by augmenting trade," Mr. Hull said. "It is the thesis on which we have continuously dwelt and circumstances have shown its great wisdom. Let the nations of the world trade together, and with such increasing trade there will be an ever-growing certainty that the peace of the world will be assured." The correspondent pointed out that Australia had intimated her willingness to enter into reciprocal trade arrangements with the United States. Mr. Hull said "Multilateral treaties, ; which cause the flow of trade not be- ; tween two nations but many nations, ■ are the true solution. That is the only method by which international trade - can best or most helpfully be stimu- ; lated. If Australia could envisage the situation it would find that the bene- ; fits which would be- derived from multilateral arrangements would be as • dollars to cents, compared with bilateral undertakings."
