SWIMMING

KARORI CARNIVAL CHAMPION RETAINS TITLES Brilliant weather conditions and a water temperature of 68 degrees made the University-Maranui swimming carnival, held at the new Karori Baths on Saturday, a success from the point of view of competitors as well as spectators. During the afternoon some very fine racing was seen. Interest centred in the Wellington Centre 100 and 220 yards freestyle championship, both of which drew good fields. In the sprint event Somervell went into the lead early and held it until near the end of the second length, with Thwaites dropping back. Pennington rapidly gained in the third lap, caught Somervell with about 15 yards to go, and won comfortably by a yard. In the 220 yards event, there was little to choose between the seven competitors until the end of the first 100 yards. Pacing each other, Pennington and Williams began to pull away, with Clark and Evans, also swimming together, close behind. At the end of the fifth lap, Pennington drew a little ahead,/and was leading by a yard at the last turn. He won by two yards, with Williams second, and Clark and Evans, close together, third and fourth respectively. In the details of events the names of the clubs are abbreviated thus: —Maranui (M.), Island Bay (I.B.), Lyall Bay (L.8.), Varsity (V,), Wellington (W.), Hutt (H.).
