PEACE "OFFER"
GERMAN ATTITUDE
NO CHANGE OF POLICE BELGIAN GUARANTEE TO EMBARRASS FRANCE 1 United I'ress Association—By Electric Telegraph— Copy.r„:i. (Received January 23, 11 a.m.) LONDON, January 22. While Heir Hitler is expected to make a new "peace offer," including a guarantee of Belgian neutrality, with the object of embarrassing France still further and detaching Flemish sentiment from her, he is not expected to give any real indication of a change of policy. The "Daily Telegraph's" Berlin correspondent says it would be surprising if Herr Hitler takes a single steps towards collective security. On the contrary, he will probably take the opportunity of disagreeing with much of Mr. Eden's speech of January 19. According to the Berlin correspondent of "The Times," Germany wishes it lo be under?tod that the time will never be ripe for a discussion of a European settlement in which she is expected to make political concessions for economic ones, j Germany realises with some resentment that the British conception of European settlement is sliffer than before Christmas. Britain coin siders that the League, which Germany treats with ever-growing contempt, still plays an important part: in Europe. The immediate value oE Mr. Eden's speech following swift action in Morocco has shown Ger* many the Western Powers' growing} alertness. The correspondent adds that Germany at last seems to realise that certain Nazi trends with respect to Spain and elsewhere cannot be long* er hidden in mists of words. THE SCRAP OF PAPER BELGIUM REMEMBERS i • |NO SLACKENING IN DEFENCE 1 (Received January 23,11 a.m.) BRUSSELS, January 22. While Belgium will not decline * neutrality guarantee if it is offered, she recalls that Germany similarly ' guaranteed her in 1914, therefore sho will not-slacken her defence programme.
