SPORTS MEETING

IN COOL OF EVENING The opportunity of seeing picked athletes in action in the cool of the evening is presented by the big athletic meeting, to be held at the Basin Reserve under electric light tonight. A party of about forty is making the trip from Wanganui to compete against the representatives of the Wellington Amateur Athletic Club, and as the events in which the members of the two teams are to compete are all scratch contests and the talent is good there should be a particularly interesting evening in store for the specThe inclusion of a number of athletes from other clubs, among them being two from Masterton, should make the events first-class tests, which it is desired they should be in view of the selection of a team to represent Wellington against Canterbury at the end of the month. Among the champions competing will be T. J. Crowe, holder of the New Zealand high jump title, and A. R. Wilson, the Wellington provincial one-mile champion. Keen interest is being taken in how Wilson shapes tonight. The mile, in which he is to appear, should provide an excellent contest. The entries numerically and the calibre of the competitors are such that the indications point to some good sport and pleasing performances. During the evening the two professional cyclists, Jack Fitzgerald (New South Wales) and Marcel Russ, a young Frenchman, are to be introduced to the spectators, and will ride ' an exhibition lap.
