OBITUARY

BISHOP GALLAGHER

DETROIT, January 21.

The death has occurred of the Kt. Rev. Michael James Gallagher, Roman Catholic Bishop of Detroit, and superior of the "radio priest," Father C. E. Coughlin. The Rt. Rev. Michael Joseph Gallagher, Bishop of Detroit, was born at Auburn, Michigan, in 1866, and was educated at Assumption College, Ontario, Mungret College, Limerick, Ireland, and the University of Innsbruck, Austria. He was ordained priest in the Roman Catholic Church in 1893, and after filling various pastorates, became vicar-general of Grand Rapids, Michigan, in 1912-16, coadjutofrbishop in 1915, bishop in 1916, and was transferred to the See of Detroit in 1918.

BRIGADIER TOMKINSON LONDON, January 21. The death has occurred of Brigadier H. A. Tomkinson, D.5.0., manager of his Majesty's racing and breeding studs since 1932. He served in the South African War and the Great War, and played polo for England against America in 1914 and 1921. Brigadier H. A. Tomkinson, D.5.0.,. was born in 1881 and educated at Eton and Sandhurst. He served in the South African War, and in the European War from 1914 to 1918, winning the D.S.O. and bar, and commanded The Royals in 1919-23 and the 3rd Meerut Cavalry Brigade in 1924-27. He has represented England at_ polo. He became manager of his Majesty's racing and breeding studs in 1932. SIR GEORGE HUNTER (Received January 22, 10 a.m.) LONDON, January 21. The death has occurred of Sir George Hunter. Sir George Burton Hunter was born in Sunderland in 1845 and educated privately. He served his apprenticeship with W. Pile, Hay, and Co., shipbuilders, Sunderland, and afterwards was some years with R. Napier and Sons, Glasgow. In 1874 he founded, with S. P. Austin, the shipbuilding firm of S. P. Austin and Hunter. In 1880 this partnership was dissolved and he became principal partner in the firm of C. S. Swan and Hunter, Wallsend-on-Tyne, now Swan, Hunter, and Wigham Richardson, Ltd. He was connected with various shipbuilding and engineering companies. He was knighted in 1918.
