LAWN TENNIS

YESTERDAY'S PLAY

PROVINCIAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

A strong northerly wind interfered with play in the Wellington provincial lawn tennis championships at Miramar late yesterday afternoon, but some ey* cellent matches were seen, although the general standard was erratic. The very promising junior, Miss Joyce Douthett, made a magnificent recovery in her match against "tip o Freda Fernie, ranked third on the Wellington women's ladder. Alter oe ins down 6-2 in the first set, she completely outdrove Miss Fernie, and secured a decisive advantage in her ability to attack from the net, taking the set 6-0. IVliss Fernie served many double faults, particularly m.the third | set. the wind catching thc ball when it was thrown high befoie being struck. Miss Fernie improved he>. driving, her forehand being Paiticu larly dangerous, but Miss Douthett also drove confidently and times caught Miss Fernie onthewiong foot. She volleyed well, and took the I young and very Promising junior. Miss Joyce Bedford, fully ex tended Miss Mavis Howe, ranked sec ond in Wellington, in the women s a showed her 3S 11 atthe baseline, drove with plenty of pace, and won many points with her greater steadin<M." Ferkins, who on Wednesday won the Waipawa tournament, ; S w° P Tlhieton M A ltolSe'll mipFWkSs. New tss&smss aga*. whnm thev defeated in straight sexs. Sturt and Edwards volleyed well 3f! ThesKond sleded pair in the men's doubles Coombe and Charters were very nearly defeated by M. £ erKins nnd Gallaeher in a very erratic niatch in which Gallagher generally dreve with confidence. Coombe smashed well, and with Charters lacked aggressive doubles combination. As a result of her long match with Mrs. Latham and her tn P..^ m in V^ ie r pawa, Miss Plummer was tired in her doubles match with Pearce. agamst Charters and Miss Howe. Pearce s service and backhand weie both fast and accurate, but Char^ r ® b f"a Howe were superior in combination. Edwards and Miss Shielplayed well against Miss Nicholls and Coombe. New Zealand champions. Miss Nic holls drove with devastating accu la As to the remarks about punctuality, it is obvious to anyone who has had experience of tennis tournaments that schedules are completely upset py wet weather. At Timaru the play was Interrupted .by ram for *> re on three days and it Was ,^ er ® possible to maintain the schedules previously announced. Also foj that reason it was necessary, m order .o complete the tournament, to ask com petitors to play more frequently than would otherwise have been the case. Mr. Hill complains about not being put on one of the three good courts. These are reserved for matches which it is considered will be most interesting from a spectator's point of view. The entertainment of visiting players was in the hands of the South Canterbury Association. It should be mentioned in fairness to them that there j were three official functions, a picture ( party, a motor drive and picnic ana a tournament ball. All these functions were well attended by visiting players and all agreed were most enjoy- ■ able. It is not usual to arrange many evening entertainments as experience ( has shown that competitors prefer to ] have evenings'free and to retire early. The seeding' of the draw was, done irf accordanc with the regulations of the N.Z.L.T.A. Actually in the mens singles seven of the eight seeded players reached the quarter finals and in the ladies' singles six out of eight reached the quarter finals.
