ATHLETIC CONTESTS

INTER-CLUB RIVALRY In December a team from the Wellington Amateur Athletic Club visited Wanganui to compete at the first of two meetings held each season with the Wanganui Club. Tomorrow night, at the Basin Reserve, the Wanganui Club will be returning the visit, and on this occasion the members of the Wellington Club are keen to overtake the lead in points established by the Wanganui Club team at the first gathering. This in itself should make for keen competition and good performances, but many of the events have been made more attractive still by the inclusion of athletes from other clubs, fhe reason for this is to assist the selector in his choice of the Wellington team to go to Christchurch for the meeting with Canterbury on January 30. These particular events, therefore, apart from the Wellington v. Wanganui aspect, will be in the nature of trials, and as the competitors will include leading athletes in the Wellington Province, they should provide excellent contests. The 880 yards, for example, should be a fine race. Among those taking part in this event will be A. Bourgeois (Wellington), E. Taylor (Petone), L. S. Black and T. A. Rafter (University), T. McCashin (Wanganui), C. Wyeth (Masterton), A. Badland (Olympic), and W. Ogg (Olympic). C. Robinson, the young Kiwi Club sprinter, has been added to those previously selected to take part in the 100 yards, and keen interest will ba taken in how he shapes against such athletes as W. Redpath and A. Welply (Wellington), E. Coleman (Kiwi), C. Hausman (Masterton), and N. Eagan (Old Boys). Robinson is also to take part in .the 440 yards, in which the other competitors include C. E. Evans (Wellington), T. McCashin . (Wanganui), and E. D. O. Clarke (University). Another good race should be the one jnile, in which the provincial champion, A. R. Wilson, will, be seen in action. In view of the entries and the talent, the meeting, which is to be held under electric light, promises to provide an excellent evening's sport. The Wanganui v. Wellington events are all scratch contests. There will be about 40 in the Wanganui team.
