HOLIDAY CRICKET

MATCH AT THE BASIN

PLUNKET SHIELD PLAYERS

The holiday today provided an opportunity for some valuable match practice, of which advantage was taken. The principal attraction in town was a match at the Basin Reserve between representatives of the Wellington Cricket Association and the Wellington Mercantile Cricket League, the Wellington Cricket Association eleven including several of the province s Plunket Shield players. The strong wind from the north was a disconcerting factor but in view of the number of times club cricket this season has been affected by rain it was something to be thankful for that the weather was at least fine and sunny. The Wellington Cricket Association team batted first, but in the pre-lunch play E. W. Tindill and V. H. du Chateau were the only batsmen who really got going, although a useful contribution of 22 also came from J. Scott (Institute), who joined the side in place of H. R. Rice (Kilbirnie). The teams are as follows: — Wellington Cricket Association—J. R. Lamr/on (captain), E. W. Tindill, B. Griffiths, V. H. du Chateau, J. R. Capstick. J. Scott, M. Thomas, R. Crawford, D. S. Wilson, J. Ashenden, and C. Randall. Wellington Mercantile Cricket League—J. H. James (captain), J. E. Brough, I. Ramsay, J. C. Dow, W. Jupp, G. A. Rotherham, A. W. V. Rowland, F. E. de Clifford, A. A. Jennings, N. B. Aldridge, H. Holmes. Tindill and Thomas opened the Wellington Cricket Association Eleven's first innings against the bowling of Rotherham and de Clifford. Early success came to de Clifford. With the third, ball of his first over he clean-bowled Thomas. 8 —1—5. Capstick joined Tindill and after getting his score to 16 was out —caught and bowled Rotherham. 62—2 —16. Du Chateau was next man in and wasted no time in opening his account. He and Tindill batted freely and appeared to be well set when Tindill was given out Ibw to Rotherham. Tindill had scored 40. Lamason and Crawford failed to get going, each being dismissed without scoring and there were five wickets down for 93 runs. DU CHATEAU SCORES FREELY. Scott was the new batsman and he began with a single. Du Chateau continued to play enterprisingly and took his score along at a brisk rate, his total reaching 40 for as many minutes' play. After the innings had been in/ progress ninety-two minutes, 100 was up on the board. With the score at 141 Scott was smartly caught behind the wickets by Holmes off de Clifford. 141_5_22, Wilson joined du Chateau (53) and opened with a two. He took his score to 14 before being dismissed by Rotherham, who took a fine lefthand catch at square-leg. Du Chateau, Whose rate of scoring had slowed up a little, was then 59.

When the luncheon adjournment was taken the total was 170 for seven wickets. •

The innings closed with the addition of only 12 runs to the pre-lunch score. Dow, who had not bowled before lunch, dismissing du Chateau, Ashenden, and Randall, the two last-named failing to score. Dow finished with the average of three wickets for 1 run. The rate of scoring was slow at the opening of the Mercantile League's first innings, only 6 runs coming after 20 minutes' play. At the time of going to press two wickets were down for 10 runs. Details: — W.C.A. First Innings. Tindill.
