AUCKLANDER'S DEATH AT MADRID

Further details of the death of his son Mr. Griffith Campbell Maclaurin, while defending Madrid with Loyalist forces in November have been received by letter by Mr. K. C. Mac laurin, of 11 Grand View Road, Mount Eden (states the "New Zealand Herald"). "On the night of November 8 I the International Unit arrived in the city and there was no army between Franco and Madrid," states the letter. "That night Maclaurin and three others went up to the front to instruct the infantry in the use of the Lewis gun, and only one of them came back. The International Unit attacked and a whole company was cut off in a house surrounded by 4000 rebels. It fired, fired, fired, and died, and what was left retired. To cover the retirement Maclaurin continued firing and was subsequently found dead his machine-gun, which he still held.
