COLONIAL SERVICE

CHANCE FOR GRADUATES

Positions are again being offered by the British Colonial Service to graduates of overseas universities, according ,to advice received by the registrars of the New. Zealand colleges from Mr. D. E. 'Fouhy, official secretary to the Governor-General and acting Dominion liaison officer for the service.

By an arrangement with the British Government several positions in the Colonial Service are open to New Zealand University graduates each year. The scheme was instituted several years ago, but until recently avenues to the Colonial Service have been closed on account of the depression. A few New Zealanders were accepted under the scheme and all have done well. The first to be accepted was Mr. R.' O. Sinclair, who was appointed Magistrate at Benin City, Nigeria, British West Africa, while Mr. P. C. Minns, a former Rhodes Scholar, also holds an administrative position in Nigeria.

This year there are one or more vacancies for New Zealanders in the administrative, medical, agricultural, or veterinary, surveying, and geological survey branches of the service. Applications for appointments are considered by local committees in the various centres, and recommendations are made to the Dominion committee, of which the Governor-General is chairman. The main committee's recommendations are forwarded to the Colonial Office, which makes the appointments. The requirement for admission to the Colonial Service under the scheme is a good degree, which must be accompanied by good all-round qualities. A high scholastic qualification is not sufficient, and the candidates required are the type who would enter for the Rhodes Scholarship.
