HOT THING MISSES

LADY INA BEATS MAESTRO

Maestro was one of those occasional astounding hot favourites in the Trentham Highweight Handicap, for he was almost completely lacking in form comparable with that of many of the other candidates in the field;* and though he failed to win he was the biggest of certainties beaten, which was sufficient to disclose that the confidence was not misplaced. In the big field the favourite was early smothered in on the fence, with no move offering till they were in the straight. Then his rider, rather than risk waiting for an opening, took him right out and round the spreading field, and he swept up brilliantly over the last furlong and a half; but the effort of reaching the leader, Lady Ina, was just beyond him. A late forlorn attempt in the last 20 yards to retrieve the position found him only a neck away, at the post. Maestro will be well watched now in any immediate future races he contests. Lady Ina led from start to finish. Laggard went up to her after two furlongs and remained with her till the straight, but then she was left clear again and she hung on without yielding when challenged. She was started in preference to her stablemate Taumau, who would have been one of the popular choices if he had been produced, and Taumau's rider, C. Thomson, was transferred to her. A Rouble-figure dividend was the reward of those who noted the move. The race indeed appeared to comprise more than one unexpected move. Lady Ina was not altogether without form, for she had won the final event against poor opposition at Marton at the New Year, and previously this season had also raced promisingly. She is a six-year-old bay mare by Cape Horn from the Bezonian — Platypus mare Kakawai, dam previously of Sir Wai and Ladyfingers, and she is now being raced by her breeder, Mr. A. Southey, after having been leased in the Wairarapa till the present season. Soho, three parts of a length away third, was always one of the front section, never actually being further back than third, and he is a horse capable of better than he has yet given. Earl Colossus went another fine race fourth most of the way and just failing to pay a dividend. Recollection came through at the false rail, but weakened and had to be satisfied with fifth, a placing he should improve upon shortly. The best of the others were Bonny Glow (running on . Convivial (forced over extra groundl, Southern Blood (who also traversed a wide track). Soloist, and Lady Wessex. Stratosphere „ was , sl £ viP' Southern Blood and Cricket made the

poorest beginnings. Laggard dropped out in the straight.
