MIRAMAR

A course heavier than is usual at New Year, a rising north-westerly wind, and long rough off the excellent fairways-, helped to keep scores up for the open stroke tournament held at Miramar on Saturday, but some very steady golf was played in the circumstances. One or two absentees were noted amongst those who had entered, but some 80 players, including many from other clubs, took part. Interest in the afternoon centred largely in the 36-hole medal round, in which the best gross score was returned by A. J. Shaw, 72, 77—149. H. A. Black and L. D. Hurst tied for second place with 154, Hurst winning by toss. A peculiarity of Hurst's steady two 77's was that he was out in 37 and back iri 40 in morning and afternoon. The veteran, moreover, holed a putt from the edge of the eighteenth green. Black did a 76 and a 78. The 36-hole medal handicap was won by F. L. Hornabrook, an English player who, with the handicap of 24 for the two rounds, covered the course in 16(i, giving him a net 142 W. F. Stilweli (24) and R. Samson (32) were second with 144. Samson won second prize with a toss. Hornabrook won the prize for the best net medal score of the day. D. A. Smith won the prize for the best medal score of the morning round with 70 net. On a draw Rawlinson won second prize in the Stableford bogey. In the afternoon bogey O. Mills (8) and C. D. Patrick (5) tied with 3 up. Patrick won by toss. Mills (10) and D. A. Smith (14) tied for the best net medal score with 70.

The prizes were presented by Mr. R. C. Butters, the Miram&r professional, who organised the tourney, which was enjoyed by all, and for whom the proceedings closed with cheers.
