BETTER WEATHER

ARCTIC KING AT MARTON

(Special to the "Evening Post.")

MARTON, January 2,

The Marton Jockey Club's Summer Meeting was concluded today in brilliant weather, the conditions being in striking contrast to those that obtained on the first day.. The attendance was good. The totalisator. handled £12,314 10s, compared with £10,497 on the second day last year, the total for the meeting being £27,2*21, as against £23,828 10s, an increase of £3392 10s. OTAKI AGAIN BEST. En Vidette was preferred to Otaki for the Ladies' Necklace, but Otaki again beat him, the two finishing well clear of the others. . . Ruenzori, En Vidette. Otaki, and Gladium was the order when they had settled down. En Vidette and Otaki closed on Ruenzori at the far turn. As on the first day this pair drew right away, and Otaki won decisively by a length and a half. First Spec, finished better than Lilbert to get third, half a dozen lengths away. HOT FAVOURITE BEATEN. Candico. with L. G. Morris in the saddle, was a short-priced favourite for the Junction Plate, but Old Surrey easily beat her into second place.; Mother-in-Law was last to leave the mark. At the far turn Old Surrey ran up to Candico in the lead, and crossing the top they were a couple of lengths clear of Aureus and Mother-in-Law. Old Surrey drew ahead of Candico at the home turn, and, galloping very "easily, he drew right away to win by five lengths. Candico was two lengths ahead of Mother-in-Law. with Missal fourth. LORD HEREFORD IMPROVES. Lord Hereford was a firm favourite for the Tutaenui Hack Hurdles, and, except for a brief spell about three furlongs from home, he was always going like the winner. Count Willonyx made a bold bid for victory but the favourite, under pressure, caught and held him in a close finish. Mid Acre was four lensths away third, and Rioghail was fourth. LAGGARD'S FIRST WIN. Cloudy Bay was- favourite for the Summer Hack, but half a mile from home she was rather badly placed and when she did make her run she just failed to reach Laggard by a short head. , Jt . ... Wee Lap had charge at the halfmile. with Windward in second place, and the order into the straight was Wee Lap, closely attended by Windward, then Otaki and Laggard. Laggard was in charge at the distance, but Cloudy Bay was putting in her claim and the pair drew away. In a hard-fought finish Laggard hung on to win by a short head. Otaki was third a length and a half away, and Mazzini was fourth. ARCTIC KING ATTRACTIVELY. Arctic King carried close on twice as much as the second favourite, Hunting Queen, in the Aldworth Stakes and he won like a good horse. Hunting Queen was sideways on when the tapes were released and she took no real part in the race. The winner's effort was most attractive and L. A. Pine handled him like a master. At the six furlongs Entail joined Grand Jury in the lead, and Seigmund moved up to third place. Grand Jury drew away from Entail at the three and he turned for home followed by Entail, Corroborce, Arctic King, and Lapel. Grand Jury was going strongly at the distance but Arctic King had commenced his finishing run and he won well by half a length from Grand Jury. Entail, galloping strongly, was only half a neck further away, and Lapel, finishing on, was a head further away fourth. It was a splendid finish, and Corroboree was close up fifth. IN FRONT ALL THE WAY. Invoice was favourite for the Telegraph Handicap, but he struck trouble after two furlongs and lost ground, which cost him what chance he had of beating Mata Hari. Mata Hari was first to show out, with Invoice next, but Invoice soon dropped out. At the three furlongs Mata Hari was a couple of lengths ahead of Pin Money, with Royal Routine, Invoice, and Hunting Lodge following at intervals of a bit over a length. This order was maintained into the straight, where Mata Hari went on to win easily by two and a half lengths from Pin Money. Royal Routine was third a' length and a half further back, and Invoice and Hunting Lodge followed at head intervals. Pin Money, having his first race for some considerable time, ran a surprisingly good race. INGENUITY'S HACK CUP. Pango was favourite—a short-priced one—for the Crofton Hack Cup. but Ingenuity beat him into second place. As in the New Year Hack Handicap on the first day, War Lap tried to slip the field, and coming to the home turn it looked as if he would do it. Pango, the nearest of the others, was five or six lengths away, and there was more daylight to Ingenuity, the bsst of the others. Pango, however, responded gamely and he had War Lap's measure at the distance. He was being proclaimed the winner, when Ingenuity joined issue, and in an exciting finish Ingenuity won well by half a neck from Pango, with War Lap only a head further away. Tractile was fourth. FOUR-HORSE RACE. Lifeguard was the favourite for the Farewell Hack Handicap, the concluding event, in which there were only four starters, but Lady Ina was Ju*t too good for him over the final bit. Lifeguard set the pace. Running

to the straight Lady Ina went after him, and, finishing solidly, wore him down to win by half a length. Kia Tere was third, three lengths away from Lifeguard, and Etiquette was close up fourth.
