ITALY'S SUBMARINES

Italy now has twenty-four sul> marines under construction, writes tha "Daily Telegraph's" naval correspond* ent. This is by far the largest cur» rent, programme of any Power. In his speech on October 10 Signor Musso« lini, referring to the state of Italy'# armaments, declared that at that timfl "several dozen" new warships were un« der .construction in Italian shipyards; The majority of these are submarine! ordered during the . Mediterranean crisi?. .During the present year, ten boats have been laid down in addition to the fourteen authorised last year. When the 24 new boats are completed Italy will have 77 submarines of modern design, or only three fewer than France, the leading submarine Power. Japan has 66 post-war boats, Great Britain 47. and tha United States 40. Of the 24 new Italian submarines, two are ocean-going units of 915 tons, two are minelayers of 656 tons, and 20 aitl coastal submarines of, 600 tops. Larg« additions are being made to.
