SEEING WITHOUT EYES
Blind fish can dash and zigzag about a rocky pool and never touch an obstacle. Fish also can travel on the darkest night upstream and avoid th« banks, rocks, fallen trees, or tree-roots, the bottom of the stream or other fish. The organ of this sense, which was recently discovered, can be seen in any fish of the salmon family unci in many others. It consists ei a channel running up the length of the fish on .either side. Over this is a cell containing a fluid, from which nerves run to the brain. They carry a message as to the least variation in the pressure of the outer water, as it varies in depth, and when flowing round obstacles, Fish do not think before acting when a danger signal of varying pressure is given. There is no time for thought. Their response to the message _sent-to. the brain is automatic.
