MANY SMALL FIELDS

WAIRARAPA OPENING TIGER GAIN SECURES CUP There was a very large attendance it the Tauherenikau course for the opening day of the Wairarapa Racing Club's Summer Meeting yesterday, and there would have been a very much greater turnover than there was it some of the fields had not been so seriously reduced by scratchings. Despite pools of just over £1000 in two of the events, the day's investments amounted to £22,444, which, under all the circumstances, was a satisfactory increase of £5893 on the £16,551 handled last New Year's Day.

. The weather was fine but very muggy after overnight rain and a somewhat threatening forenoon. Under the trees, usually so dry, it was damp and soft, and the track was lifeless, unusual for Tauherenikau. There was also not the ciistomary colour about the lawns, as drab clothing was .the general order. Coats were necessary but an inconvenience in the sultry conditions. The reduced fields naturally affected the quality of the racing, but there . were nevertheless many keen finishes. 'The Wairarapa Cup, deservedly won by Tiger Gain, was a good contest all the way, and so was the Champion Hack Cup, won narrowly by Helen Ford. After the latter race the trophy, a canteen of cutlery, was presented by Mr. J. W. Card, one of the club's vice-presidents, to Mr. C. A. Cameron, .4)f Featherston, the breeder-owner of the winner. Trentham stables, well represented, failed to win a single .fevent.
