WOMEN'S WAGE

AUSTRALIAN IDEAS An interesting account of a recent discussion in the Australian Legislative Assembly regarding the rate of women's wages appears in an Australian exchange. It is stated that after some special meetings of the State Cabinet and the two Ministerial parties a Bill was introduced in the As* sembly providing that the living wags for adult females should be 54 per cent, of the living wage: declared for a man, wife, and one child. On this basis the new women's wage would amount to £1 17s 6d per week, the wage fixed by the Industrial Commission Jiaving been £1 15s 6d. Provision was made for appeals against this "handsome" provision apparently, the appeals ttf be heard by three Judges. One member declared that the basic wage for women must have been fixed, on "prison rations," but congratulated the Government on raising the amount even by so little.
