NEW SHIPS FOR OLD
Owing to the shortage of iron and steel, due to the re-armament programme,.it has been decreed that Hamburg shipyards may build new ships only if they can provide an equal tonnage of old ships for scrapping, to furnish the .necessary ,metal for the new vessel. Factories which are not producing war material, and which are building bridges for the new motor highways or engaged in some similar work, must wait for. four to six months for iron ana steel bars, as the foundries are unable to meet the demand. The exporting industry has had a hard struggle • in' obtaining preferential treatment. In these circumstances there is a run on the wholesale dealers which is rapidly depleting their stock. Many factories have begun hoarding, but the Control Board is taking active measures against such steps.
