SCHEME FOR TRANSFER OF
FAMILIES

A new scheme for the transfer, of elderly unemployed with families of adolescents from depressed areas of Britain to the vicinity of the industrial areas of the Midlands and southern England, where there are better prospects of work, has been approved by the Special Commissioner, and, in conjunction with the Land Settlement Association, as an initial step 250 cottage homesteads, each consisting of a single detached house and half an. acre of land, will be made available for those transferred at rentals of about 10s 6d weekly. '■
The scheme will be financed out of the Special Areas Fund, and the immediate cost will be about £125,000. The association will train the occupiers of its houses in the proper use of the land, and will supervise their work, and it is hoped that the younger members of the families will find work in the neighbourhood. .
