The general forecast for the Dominion as a whole, issued at noon today, is for moderate south-westerly winds to the north of Kawhia and East Cape. Elsewhere moderate to, strong southwesterlies to north-westerlies may be <■ expected, gale force being reached at. times about the Gook Strait area. In the-iar south winds will be more variable iri direction, with south-easterlies predominating at first. In the southern half of the South Island the weather will be cloudy to overcast, with mist or fog in places and intermittent rain., Elsewhere it will be mainly fair and warm, although with isolated showers in districts with a westerly aspect.. •
The weather on Saturday was fair io fine generally under the influence of an anticyclone. The highest pressure in the anticyclone continues to cover the western part of the Tasman Sea and northern New Zealand, but since Saturday night a series of westerly depressions has been crossing to the south. Hence moderate to fresh south-westerly to westerly winds have prevailed. Since Saturday night the weather in the South Island has been changeable with- scattered rain, and there have been some heavy falls in the western and far southern portions. A few isolated showers have also fallen on the west coast of the North Island. Temperatures this morning had become cooler over the southern half of the South Island, but otherwise it has been warm, and especially so yesterday.
Auckland's weather has been fair, although cloudy at times, with southwesterly breezes. At 9 a.m. today it was cloudy with a light west-south-westerly wind.
,-Wellington had a fair to fine-week-end, a north-westerly breeze freshening at times. On Saturday 8.8 hours of bright sunshine were recorded, Sunday's total being 11.2 hours. The maximum shade temperature yesterday was 72 degrees.
The weather in Chrlstchurch both on Saturday and Sunday was mostly overcast, with a north-easterly to easterly breeze. It was still dull there this morning. with a light wind from the north-east.
It was warm in Dunedin on Saturday and fair to cloudy, with very little wind. Sunday was a dull and wet day with a light wind from the south. It was still raining there at 9 a.m. today, up to which hour the fall had totalled 139 points, but the wind had changed to a light east-north-easterly.
