CHRISTMAS FAIR

AT EVANS BAY

OFFICIAL OPENING

A splendid start was made' on Saturday afternoon with the Wellington1 Municipal Tramways Band's carnival and Christmas fair, which is being held on the Evans Bay foreshore. The show is probably the biggest yet held in the district. " . ,"

Long before the official opening the carnival was in- full swing, and parking places in adjacent streets ■ were hard to find. The residents of Kilbirnic, Lyall Bay, Miramar, Hataitsi, and the "surrounding suburbs turned out in force, especially -the juvenile element,, which found amusement and novelty in plenty in the many sideshows, stalls, and games. Preparations were practically complete when opening time came, there being very few of the deserted and unfinished - stands usually in evidence on the first day of such functions. Mr. A. Burns, the chairman, introduced the Hon. H. T. Armstrong, Minister of Labour, who performed the opening ceremony in place of the Hon. R. Semple, who was absent f rom IWellington. - . '. A WONDERFUL SHOW. "We pride ourselves in Christchurch that our show is very wonderful," said Mr. Armstrong, "but I doubt if it has anything that this show has riot; •During the holiday season, people will- be travelling hundreds, in some cases thousands, of miles looking for enjoyment. Those who remain at r home in Wellington, however, are having their enjoyment provided, for them." . • A vote of thanks was proposed by Mr. C. Patchett, president of the band, and was carried with cheers. Mr. Patchett explained that the object of the carnival was to raise £800 for the. purchase of new instruments. .' . ' . A large and varied collection of sideshows provides a fine field for those tired of winning prizes (or losing money) at the many games of skill.
