SWIMMING

CARNIVAL AT HUTT

AUSTRALIANS' FINE SHOWING

Though the attendance at the Wellington Centre's carnival at the Riddiford Baths, Lower Hutt, on Saturday i night was below what was expected, ! the carnival was a success from a competitive and instructive point of view. The main attraction was the appearance of the Australian champions, W. | Fleming, swimmer, and A. O'Connor, diver Unfortunately, Fleming had contracted a heavy cold, which necessitated his leaving his bed to compete in the carnival. Notwithstanding this, he won the invitation 100 yards shortlimit handicap, though the time "in tins event was by no means impressive. His team-mate, however, amply made up for his early withdrawal by putting on a long and varied repertoire of plain *and fancy dives, all executed with a skill and poise equal to the best work of visiting experis seen in Wellington. | Mr. D. Hellmrich, the coach accompanying the swimmers, described each dive through a loud-speaker. Before the 100 yards event, he gave a brief resume of the points to be noted in .Fleming's swimming. In the race, I Somervell went ahead early, and held his position through two laps. A bad turn gave Fleming the lead, which he held for the last length. Pennington and Simon both passed Somervell, who swam on the ropes for part of the last lap. • DETAILED RESULTS. 33 1-3 Yards Schoolboys' Handicap. —L. Piper (Bsec), 1; McHattie (ssec), 2; D.
