A GOOD MILE

SPORTS AT HATAITAI

WIND UNPLEASANT

The new Hataitai sports ground is . not the most pleasant of places when the wind is blowing from the north, as both spectators and competitors dis-j covered at the Wellington Amateur i Athletic''Centre's gathering there on . Saturday afternoon. But though the wind was fresh and gusty and lifted some dust on the clayey patches, athletes and cyclists lacked nothing in -keenness, and in several of the races there were excellent finishes. Tha entries generally were not Numerous, nor was the all-round < ianri»'-> of performance of a very high aevel, the wind, of course, being a handicap, but in the one mile handicap there was a good field of 19 runners, and this was quite the best race of the meeting. It was won by W. Ogg, former provincial half-mile champion, from P. Bay, a young runner in his teens, who has come to Wellington from the South Island, and -who, judging from his effort in this race, should be heard of quite a lot during the season. At the top of the, long home straight it appeared that Ogg had the race "in his pocket," but Bay challenged him strongly, and Ogg was extended to win by a few yards from the fast-finishing Bay. Another good performance in this race was that registered by A. J. Mackay, Wellington provincial three-mile champion, who was third from the 20 yards mark. He ran a strong final lap, drawing away from A. R. Wilson, the Wellington one-mile champion, who eased up in the straight. J. Hamilton, a new member of the - Wellington Club, was another who impressed. He won the 220 yards handi- • cap, and was second in the 220 yards; hurdles handicap. By the time he had run in the final of the hurdles Hamilton had covered the furlong four times—heat and final of the 220 yards handicap and heat and final of the hurdles. Hamilton has good length of limb, and is quite pacy between the hurdles. Other aspirants for the provincial 220 yards hurdles title probably well need to watch him. Miss A. Gibbs, the Wellington provincial champion, started from the scratch mark in the women's 100 yards handicap, and won the final r> the . tape. . . ; Therei were two cycle races, in both i of which Les Sowcrby and A.
