SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIP
INSTITUTE V. OLD BOYS
Wellington College Old Boys were weakened by the absence oA J. Lamason, Griffiths, and Bird for their fixture with Institute, and by the end of the day they were not happily situated. The Kelburn ground was in good condition when.lnstitute won the toss and decided to bat. Beyond an occasional ball- keeping low, the pitch played very, well. Institute began badly, and Law and Bilby were both back in the pavilion with the score only 22. Crook joined A. McLean, and the bowlers were held up, but Boyes, coming on a second time, had McLean out leg-before. The partnership between Crook and Scott produced 75 and was responsible for some lively batting. Scott scored the faster, but Crook's form was excellent, something like that of a few seasons ago. Scott's driving and hooking were powerful, but the choicest strokes were three late-cuts by Crook. Scott Avas the first to go through trying to hoist a slow dropping ball out of the ground, but it went to Browne in the long field and he made a good catch. Crook ran to 56 when he tried to pull one from Boyes, but edged it into his stumps. O'Keefe and Burke made useful contributions and showed fair 'form. The total reached 221, and the two young bowlers, Boyes and Whyte, took five for 66 and five for 69 respect"oid''Boys began their first innings S. no-ball, tut .lie w. recalled and SsnrscSniiSdVATss by Henderson was a brilliant one, inches from the ground.
