When the claims of the New Zealand Federated Drivers' and Related Trades' Industrial Association of Workers for a Dominion award' Were poutinued in the Arbitration Court today, Mr. J.;'.C. Black, representing. .the... South Auckland Council of Carriers'i Associations, called evidence on carrying, conditions in South Auckland in support of claims for more flexible conditions for country carrying. , ■ '.' '' "■ ■'"'■ Mr. H. Bishop, who appeared as advocate for the employers," objected to the hours for drivers being fixed "according to the house" and said that the case of drivers was" hot' a: parallel with-that of storemen and'packers.
Mr. "A. Farlane,'the Workers' representative, said that the-workers would not admit that the cartage^ of live stock on Sundays was essential and. if such work had to be done double time should be paid. They admitted that the cartage : of milk and cream had to. be undertaken on" Sundays, but they submitted: that .the drivers Should be compensated. They were. prepared to accept time and a;half for such work. He repeated .his arguments ; '.iri favour of the hours being fixed "according to;j the house."
