SCOUT NOTES

Arrangements are well in hand for the Metropolitan Old Wolves' meeting, to be held in St. Peter's Hall next Monday at 8 p.m. All interested are cordially invited tb attend. Mr. C. O. Clark, Metropolitan District Rover Scout leader, has been granted leave of absence until the end of February owing to private business. We are very sorry to have to forgo Mr. Clarke's services even for so short a period, but it is hoped that after his rest he will be on the job keener thaa ever. The Rover Metropolitan quarterly meeting has been postponed owing to the speaker being unable to fix a date that will be suitable. As the first Wellington crew den will not be available on December 7, the next Rover Council meeting will be held on December. 14. The Hutt Valley and Bays Country District are holding a combined pacli meeting at the home of the Country Commissioner, Mr. J. E. F. Vogei, Woburn Road,' Lower Hutt, at 2.30 on Saturday afternoon. A cordial invitation is extended to any Cub officers interested. If anyone would like to accept this invitation they are asked to let the metropolitan secretary know so that arrangements may be made. A "wind-up" social will be held on Wednesday, December 3, at 126 Cuba Street. This is the final evening for the year of the monthly evenings run by the Catholic Scouters, and all Scouters will be made very welcome. There is no need to assure any who have attended previous eyenings that they will have a very enjoyable time. The first Roseneath group is holding a dance on Thursday ; night in the Scout den' (behind the Roseneath School). All Scouters, Rovers, and their friends will be very welcome. Informal dress will be worn. :■. The annual combined church parade of Catholic Scouts and Scouters will be held on Sunday at Petone at 9 a.m. ~ Cub officers of the Wellington Soutn District are reminded to practice pack items ready for the Cub rally at Seatoun, arranged for the second Saturday in December, from 2.45 to 4 p.m., when aJI packs will be dismissed under a responsible person in charge. The Old Wolves of the district will then proceed with a weekend palaver. The Seatoun Scout den has been lent lor the occasion. . ' -A letter has been received from a Rover crew.in Southern Rhodesia asking to be put in touch with a few Rovers or Scouts with a view to exchanging stamps. Anyone caring.to take this matter up may obtain further information from the Metropolitan Two small electric torches found at the Tauherenikau camp at Labour Day have been handed in to the MetropoliLast week the Wellington North District Court of Honour held its last meeting for the year. There was a very line muster of Scouters present, and the District Commissioner is very grateful to all who helped to make the meeting such a success. A most interesting feature of the programme was a talk on "Stars"' by Mr. Quinnell. BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONS. On Friday night, November 20 the St Francis de Sales Group, Island Bay. held their third birthday celebra-tions.-'and oh, what a night! The St. Francis pack had as visitors the St. Cuthbert's pack, and between them was manifest a true spirit of brotherhood. Games were a feature of the evening, and judging by the noise made they were exceedingly popular. Early in the evening Mr. Sadler,. District Commissioner for South, arrived, and was welcomed by a combined grand howl, and then by the troop with the Dominion haka. Mr. O'Brien, group chairman, welcomed Mr. Sadler on behalf of the group committee, and those present. Mr. Sadler replied and opportunity was taken to • ask him to present the Cubs with their first and second stars. The following were presented: Second stars to Gulf Barnao, Gerard Walters, Noll Fox, Frank Gardner, Tony Nolan, and Peter Church; first stars to Peter Bleakley, Maurice Cotter, Ross Hogg, Lawrence Walters, Joe Barfiao, and Tom Redican. Mr. Sadler also presented second-class badges to Patrol Leader Bern. Ryan and Scouts Dennis Cass and Maurice Aherne. Mr. T. O. Donnelly, Scoutmaster of the Group, was presented with his Wood badge. Full justice was done to the supper provided, and thanks are extended to the young ladies who looked after the arrangements. Mr. Boyle cut the cake, which was a gift of the group committee. A camp-fire was held. After a sing-song the St. Cuthbert cubs, led by their Cubmaster, Mr. J. Reilly, gave a demonstration' of yells. The singing of the Maori farewell, "taps," and the lowering of the flag brought to a close the third year of the group's existence. Among those present were the Rev. Fathers McGrath and Spillane, Mr. B. O'Brien (chairman Group committee), Mr. D. Cass (Group secretary and treasurer), Mr. W. Lepper, Mr. P. Sadler (District Commissioner, South), Mr. D. Boyle (District Commissioner, North), the Rev. F. Tooley (chairman, St Cuthbert's Group committee), Mrs. Hart (secretary, St. Cuthbert's Group committee), Scouters from the Island Bay Baptist and St. Cuthbert's, and a number, of parents and visitors. Apoldgies "were 7 received from the Metropolitan Commissioner and Mrs. Foster, Miss Fitzgibbon (District Cubmaster), Mrs. Hoggard (acting District Cubmaster), and ,Mr. R. Fanthorpe (District Scoutmaster). ■'iThe St. Mark's pack held a very successful pound night recently. The Revi' N. F. E. Robertshawe was present and in a few words wished the cubs an enjoyable evening. The Rev. V. C. Venimore, the pack's former Akela, was also present, and was accorded a very hearty welcome by the cubs. The early part of the evening was spent in games, and later the cubs adjourned to their den, where songs and impromptu items were enjoyed round a camp fire. Supper followed, including a cake specially prepared for the occasion by Bagheera (Miss Rudkin). The pack intends holding andther 1 such evening early in the coming year. Last Monday vgroup committees, Scouters, Scouts, and district officers of Wellington South met at St. James's Hall to bid farewell and make a presentation to their, former Scoutmaster, Mr.fE.W. Heath. After flag break, and the singing of the National Anthem, the .Dominion haka was given to !Mr. Sadler, District Commissioner for South. A game followed and then the boys and officers were drawn up into 'a horseshoe formation. Address-1 ing the gathering Mr. Sadler explained that they had met to show appreciation of the work carried out by Mr. Heath during his twenty years' connection with Scouting. On behalf of the Wellington South district Mr. Sadler asked Mr. Heath to accept a large framed photograph of the "Father of Scoutr ing," Lord Baden-Powell, and also the gift of the "Thanks badge." Mr. Sadler expressed his gratitude for all that Mr.- Heath had done for him arid the boys, and wished Mr. Heath the very best of luck for the future. Mr. Green (deputy Camp chief) also expressed his regret at losing Mr. Heath, and briefly outlined Mr. Heath's connection with Scouting since he had first met him. Whilst Mr. Heath was gathering his thoughts, a humorous song was given by Patrol -Leader Bob Russell, of the Island Bay Baptist troop. Mr. Heath expressed his deep appreciation of the gifts he had received and the thoughts which inspired them. He related a number of amusing incidents of his various experiences in camp, etc. Mr. R. Fanthorpe (District Scoutmaster) called for three cheers for Mr. Heath, and received a splendid response. Mr. Heath congratulated Mr. Fanthorpe on his appointment as District Scoutmaster, and called on the boys to give three cheers for their new District Scoutmaster; this also was responded to with a will. A brief campfire, flag down, "taps," and supper finished an excellent evening. To the ladies who prepared supper grateful thanks are extended. Among those present were Mr. Sadler (District Commissioner) and district officers, Mr. C. Green (deputy Camp chief), Mr. B. O'Brien (chairman St. Francis de Sales), Mr. Wright iSt. James's), Mrs. Baker and Mrs. Wells (Seatoun), Mrs. Harris and Mrs. Redmond (St. Thomas's), Mrs. Hart (St. Cuthbert's), Mr. E.
