NEWS OF THE DAY

Fast Service.

Wireless, telephones, and telegraph combined in a rapid service to motorists last evening, when the secretary of the Automobile Association (Wellington), Mr. W. A. Sutherland, received the news that the Manawatu Gorge Road was blocked at the waterfall one mile from the south end, and was not expected to be cleared before this afternoon. The first step was to notify 2YA; then Palmerston North, New Plymouth, the Wairarapa, Hawera, and Napier were telephoned, and finally telegrams were sent to Wanganui and Auckland—all within half an hour. The slip was caused by heavy rain, and spread completely across the road. Wharves and Motorists;. Signs directing motorists to the various Wellington wharves will be erected within the next ten days so that they can be available for the heavy Christmas traffic. This was reported at last evening's meeting of the executive of the Automobile Association (Wellington). Placing the Credit. Commenting on the increased interest shown in the affairs of the Wellington Manufacturers' Association, the president (Mr. Lan Matheson) remarked at the annual meeting last night that he placed in two quarters the credit for having stimulated this active interest. "First, there is our secretary (Mr. A. W; Nisbet), who spares no time or effort to bring in new members. . . • The other party to whom credit is due is the Rt. Hon. M. J. Savage and his colleagues, whoso avalanche of legislation has .. driven many members into the arms of the association."
