SWIMMING CONTROL

OTAGO'S LONE HAND

NO CHANGE OF HEAD-

QUARTERS

(By Telegraph—Press Association.)

CHRISTCHURCH. November 30,

The Otago proposal to move the | headquarters of the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association away from Christchurch was before the council of the association at the annual meeting this evening. On behalf of t'->° Otago Centre, Mr. A. T. Stokes moved that the headouarters be moved from Christchurch The council, he said, had not been able to arrange any tour by overseas swimmers, yet the centres had done so successfully. The Otago administrators felt they had been slighted, particularly over the case of P. E. Mathieson, the Otasjo nominee for the O'-mpic Games. They felt they were entitled to more consideration from '"'" : council. _ Delegates from the Wellington, Canterbury, West Coast, Wanganui, Nelson Manawatu, Southland, and South Auckland Centres said thp-.had been instructed to oppose the motion, lney expressed confidence L; the council as at present constituted. . Mr. B O'Neill, the secretary, said it was untrue that Wellington was dissatisfied. Only one member of the Wellington Association was opposed jo the present council. The Otago Centre appeared to believe that Mathieson s claims to inclusion in the Olympic team had been turned down because he (Mr. O'Neill) did not favour them. This was not so. He was the servant of the council, and the council acted on the opinions of every centre except Otago when it refused Mathieson s nomination. The motion was rejected, Mr. Stokes being the only member to vote for it. A new centre, to be known as the Bay of Plenty Centre, was established. The area was formerly part of the South Auckland district, which proposed the formation of the new centre. Officers were elected as follows: — Deputy president, Mr. F. G. Dunn; North Island representative, Mr. P. Coira; representative on the National Swimming. Life-saving, and Surf Committee. Mr. P. Coira; treasurer. Mr. F. G. Dunn; representative on the International Swimming Federation, Mr,' John Hoc^on; bandicapper, Mr. P« Coira; auditor, Mr. R. L. Hicks; secr^ retary, Mr. B. O'Neill; representative on the Olympic and British Ermafa*: Games Association, Messrs. P. Coira, P. N. Rundle, and N. N. Oldershgtv. The election of -resident was defenjed. Mr. H. Goldsmith moved on t*fhrUf of the Auckland Centre a proposal to abolish the Is registration fee aft; present set aside for- the overseas ■■ xund. The voting on the motion war/<- 'even, but as a three-fifths majority was required for alterations to the rules it was not cai-ried. Mr. O'Neill reported that /tb.ere was a possibility of a visit of Ajnerican swimmers to Australia. He; 7aad written to Australia seeking Vttformation so that the possibility qf bringing the visitors to New Zealand tcould be investigated. ■■ The Maori championiiMPS in the new season were allotted, -to the Bay of Plenty Centre. __^
