UNEXPECTED WINNERS

TAKAPUNA MEETING

SPEARCOURT, SWEET ROSE

(By Telegraph.) (Special to tne "Evening Post.") I AUCKLAND, November 30. ■ Features of the concluding day of i the Takapuna Jockey Club's" Spring ; Meeting at Ellerslie today were sur- '• prise wins by Sweet Rose and Spear- | court. The weather was inclined to ibe showery, and the track was again ' slow, although not as soft as on Satur- \ day. ' There was a fair attendance, and the i totalisator investments were £27,602 : [ 10s, against £21,132 10s on the second day last year, an increase of £6470. The total for the meeting was £58,953 10s, compared with £48.795 10s last year, an increase of £10,158. NICE PRICE AGAIN. Lap Up, again at a nice price, won the Kawau Hurdles in an interesting finish. He was always handy. He took .the final fence on terms with Merry Lap and Kanapa, and then just outstayed them in the run home, although the third horse was actually going the best at the post. Gigantic and United, both a long way back, were the only others to finish. Dark Marble crashed at the last hurdle when four lengths behind the leaders. Luciaus, who is not jumping as well as he was earlier in the season, fell when leading three fences from home, and All Irish slipped on landing at the next fence when running alongside Lap Up in the van., Both Gigantic and All Irish were very lame after the race. CONVINCING VICTORY. Valamito, under a good hold, was on the rails behind the • leading division in the Vauxhall Handicap, and once straightened up he came through to score1 most convincingly. King Neptune was one of the leaders and he was under the whip at the false rail to hang on for second, clear of the little-fancied Salva. Strathire was close up fourth, and Lone Flier, Morning Sun, and Speedfast were all handy. Valamito, a three-year-old by Vaals. won well and should be able to hold his own in good hack company. King Neptune, who also showed considerable promise, is a three-year-old colt by Tidal from Queen March, and so is a half-brother to Limarch, King March, and Gay Marigold. RETURN TO FORM. • After waiting on the leaders, Square Acre, Paso Robles, and Royal Passage, to the turn for home, Fleetwind ranged alongside Square Acre inside the distance and the pair had a rare duel to the judge, the former drawing out in the last few strides to win by a neck. Gay Egypt was running on for a good third, clear .of Royal Passage, Paso Robles, and Winlona. It was a good effort on the part of the first two horses, both of whom had not shown form for some time. Square Acre looks like an early winner. Gay Egypt did well, for he had to make up a good deal of ground in the final quarter. Royal Passage, a maiden, was always in the picture. The winner paid a double-figure dividend. CONSISTENCY REWARDED. The consistent King Rey followed up his two seconds by winning the St. Andrew's Handicap in handsome fashion, beating a splendid field in a fine finish. Namakia began brilliantly, whereas Tradesman was the last to leave the barrier. King Rey soon gained a handy position, and two furlongs from home he was on the heels of Namakia, Knight of Australia, and Armacourt. It was a good contest up the straight, King Rey and Armacourt being level at the distance, where Mazir challenged. The three were on terms a. little further on, but King Rey then shot out to score narrowly from Mazir, who defeated Armacourt in the last couple of strides. Wait and See was a length and a half away fourth, with Crooning, High Tea, Kelly, Knight of Australia, and Tradesman in a bunch. King Rey's performance was good, and so was Mazir's, who handled the heavy track well. Armacourt was made too much use of in the middle stages, which accounted for her weakening. The placed horses were always in better positions than any of the others, and they never let up in the final stages. Namakia's run could be considered a splendid effort in view of her Railway Handicap engagement on Boxing Day. Prince Colossus was handy early and then had to be ridden hard to keep his position. NUCLEI'S FIRST WIN. Of the fine field of two-year-olds that contested the Rakino Handicap, Nuclei displayed most improvement, for she outstayed her opponents to pay a solid win dividend. She was in the bunch behind Huntingmore, Bachelor King, and Highborn making the home turn, and though Bachelor King held command at the distance she came with a fine run to score her first victory in a keen finish, with Highborn running on strongly for a close third and Elanage a head away fourth. Huntingmore was next, and Feldberg and Disturbed did best of the others. The winner, who is a half-sister by Acre to the defunct Gay Chief, hung on splendidly and is improving all the time. Bachelor King revealed a lot of pace from an outside barrier position, and while he failed to concede Nuclei 191b his effort was brilliant, and he may have to be considered for the G.N. Foal Stakes. Highborn made a good showing, and he will not be long in arriving at his best. He is the Baralong—Nobility colt purchased on behalf of an Auckland syndicate at the Randwick sales for 180 guineas. Elanage went fairly well. Privy Seal was never going kindly, and she finally got on to the heels of another horse near the post and dropped Wiggins, who was not injured. SURPRISE IN PLATE. There was a big surprise in the Pupuke Plate, which Sweet Rose won nearly all the way to pay a win dividend of over a quarter of a century. Sweet Rose was well clear of the field at the bottom of the home stretch, and while the warm favourite Kilonsoa made an effort she failed to get within striking distance of the -winner. Quadroon headed Inver for third, and there was a gap back to Mainland, Bantry, and Merial, with Tosh last. Sweet Rose had always been very fast, but she had not raced for some time, hence her neglect by backers. She ran one of her best races in this class of race at this meeting last season. Of the beaten division Quadroon and Inver will improve. Bantry lost his chance by a slow beginning. . IMPASTO'S SOLID EFFORT. Impasto prevailed in a great finish in the Ngataringa Handicap. He jumped away best, and Johnny Walls ran up to him at the end of a furlong. Impasto shook off Johnny Walls-at the half-distance, and then the weight began to tell. He weakened near the judge, but held on gamely to win by a neck from Tybalt, with Johnny Walls a similar distance away. Princess Star, Lady Ruler, and Shy were next, the last-named being tailed oil at the home turn. Impasto is back to his best, and he now seems more genuine, for he has won twice and run second at his last three outings. Tybalt was a bit unlucky in the straight. MAIDEN UPSETS THEM. There was a surprise in the Stanley Handicap. Spearcourt notching his first success after trying for two years to win a maiden. He was in the middle of the field most of the way. Philemup, Student Prince, and King Tut were in line negotiating the home bend, and King Tut was in charge half-way up the running. Then Spearcourt put in his claim on the inside and gave nothing a chance. King Tut narrowly beat Loombination and Philemup for third. Student Prince was one of the first horses beaten, but he may go better on top of the ground. RESULTS IN DETAIL.
