GRAND JURY SCORES

FEILDING MEETING ANOTHER LARGE TURNOVER (Special to the Post.") PALMERSTON N.. This Day. The Feilding Spring Meeting was concluded in showery weather. There had been rain during the previous night and the course was slightly holding. The totalisator investments during the day amounted to £13,356 10s, as against £81.11 on the corresponding day last year, and the total for the meeting was £30,429, as compared with £18,176, the increase being £12,253. LORD HEREFORD IMPROVES. Beau Gallante was a good favourite for the Cheltenham Hurdles, with the first day's victor, Beau Star, next in demand. The winner, however, was Lord Hereford, who ran disappointingly on Saturday, but who was going smoothly fight from the outset yesterday. Beau Gallante ran another good race but he could not hold Lord Hereford over the last bit. .Miss Hushabye was well forward five furlongs from home, but she was done with at the last fence but one. Limulus was always making heavy weather of it. and although she made some play" at the home turn the best she could do was to finish third. Beau Star, who finished fourth, was giving' away a lot of ground most of the way. TOORAK FINISHES BEST. The Bigot, from L. G. Morris's stable, and Mazzini, were preferred to En Vidette and Toorak for the Novice Stakes. The quartet provided the placegetters, but the winner was Toorak, who, after being well back early, steadily improved, and once heads were turned for home went through, to score decisively by a length from The Bigot. En Vidette finished fast to cut Mazzini out of third place. Alloa, The Bigot, Old Surrey.Mazzini, Reserve Bank, En Vidette, and Toorak was the order after they had settled down, and Alloa and Old Surrey showed the way into the straight with The Bigot, Toorak, and Mazzini next. The Bigot had charge at the distance, but it was not long before Toorak headed him. A few yards from the post En Vidette swept up and passed Mazzini, getting to within a head of The Bigot. GRAND JURY NARROWLY. Grand Jury, third in the betting order lor the St. Andrew's Handicap, made a forward move at the home turn and he beat Rona Bay and Gay Boy by a very narrow margin in a punishing finish. He was always going kindly. This is his first win since he scored an the Wanganui Cup last January. Jubilee Song, Grand Jury. Rona Bay, Davistock, and Gay Boy was the early order and there was not much pace on. Hona Bay was on Jubilee Song's quarters as they passed the five, and Grand Jury, under a good hold, was next. Gay Boy improved his position a bit crossing the top and Grand Jury and Gay Boy (wide out) were challenging Jubilee Sorig and Rona Bay at the home turn, the four turning into the straight almost in line. It was a great finish. Rona Bay had charge a furlong from home, but Grand Jury and Gay "Boy' were hard at it and Grand Jury' got' up just an time,' winning by a short head. Gay Boy was only half a head further away, and Jubilee Song was two lengths back fourth. GOOD EFFORT BY KARL. After her first day's showing Mother Superior was in firm demand for the Colyton Handicap, but strangely she did not seem able to handle the going and she finished last. There were five starters and after they had settled down Karl was in front and he stayed there to the finish, holding Mata Hari in a hard-fought finish. Karl, from the second position, soon had the rails, and he showed the way across the top closely attended by Farmer and Mother Superior. Mata Hari was in third place as they ran to the home turn and Karl led into the straight half a length in front of Farmer, with Mata Hari next. Farmer put in his claim at the bottom of the straight, but Karl hung desperately to his lead. When Farmer cried enough Mata Hari took Karl on and under pressure Karl won by a neck. Bodyline was four lengths away third and Farmer fourth. An inquiry into interference with Mother Superior by Farmer at the home turn was held and no action was taken, Farmer having gone over under punishment. GREENWICH ON THE BIT. Greenwich was beaten into third place in the Juvenile event on Saturday, but she began very quickly in the Oroua Nursery and was never headed, winning easily by four lengths from Wildflower, with Laughing Chief in third place. The race on Saturday improved Greenwich. The ■ race needs little description. Greenwich went out like a shot from' a gun. At the far turn he was well clear of Wildflower, Laughing Chief, Gay Molly, Tipsy Miss, Lady Montana, and Amatory. At the home turn B. H. Morris, on Greenwich, looked round to see where the others were. He need not have troubled, for the issue was never in doubt. Wildflower and Laughing Chief had a good go for second, and Wildflower held on to beat Laughing Chief by a good length. Lady Montana was fourth, followed by Amatory and Tipsy Miss together. EASY FOR INGENUITY. King's Lancer was favourite for the Rongotea Hack Handicap but he never looked like winning. The Awapunitrained mare Ingenuity, the second favourite, ran to the front three furlongs from home and she was never afterwards threatened, winning very easily by four lengths. Master Limond was last at the half-mile but he went through on the fence when the straight was reached and he finished very solidly to cut Charade out of second money. Nothing had a chance of catching Ingenuity. Waipiro was fourth, •followed by Hatuma, Cloudy Bay, Maestro, and King's Lancer. DOUBLE FOR STABLE. Grand Jury's stablemate, Brazen King, who races in the same colours, was seventh favourite for the Nikau Hack Handicap, but he nevertheless finished too solidly for another littlefancied runner, Prevail, and scored ch-awing away by the best part of a length. Black Thread was the favourite, but after being one of the leaders to •the straight he faded out of the picture. Black Thread and Great Hope were together ahead of Erebus at the far turn, and approaching the straight Great Hope. Black Thread. Vonia Park, Prevail, and Brazen King were almost in line ahead of Erebus and Rustem. In the rim to the judge Great Hope, Prevail, and Brazen King drew out, Brazen King winning decisively by three-quarters of a length from Prevail, who just beat Great Hope. Kindheart. after missing the jump-out, did well to finish fourth. Sanhedrim was fifth, followed by Erebus, The Buzzer, and Vonia Park. LOWENBERG SHOWS CLASS. Lowenberg and Royal Secret carried very solid support in the concluding event, the Empire Handicap, and half a furlong from the post it looked as if Lowenberg was going to be beaten, Royal Secret at that stage going like the winner. Lowenberg, however, responded to a last appeal by Atkins, and with three or four tremendous bounds he collared Royal Secret right on the post. When they... had settled down

I Alchemic was setting me pace, iojiowled by Royal Secret, Hunting Lodge, Blue Garter, Darecourt, , and Lowenbcrg. The order was the same at the far turn, where Lowenberg commenced to move forward. Turning into the j ■ straight Royal Secret and Hunting Lodge were attended by Alchemic, with Lowenberg next, on the fence, and Darecourt, on the outer. Then Royal Secret drew out, followed by Lowenberg, who, hard ridden, began to hang in. Atkins had to check the favourite, but once he had him straightened again he responded like a good one and won by a head. Blue Garter finished on in third place a length away from Royal Secret, and Lord Moutoa was fourth. Next were Hunting Lodge and Darecourt. RESULTS IN DETAIL.
