TWO MONTHS IN GAOL

THEFT FROM BAR TILL

A sentence of two months' imprisonment with hard labour was imposed by Mr. J. H. Luxford, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court this afternoon upon John Trevor Gibbons, alias John Edward Mallin, a seaman, aged 23, who pleaded guilty to the theft of £3 from a hotel bar till. Detective-Sergeant L. Revell prosecuted. Detective A. Reid said that the defendant was drinking- in a Wellington hotel on November 26. When the barman left the bar for a few moments, the defendant jumped over the counter, opened the till, took £3 out of it, jumped back, and made in the direction of the wharves. He had deserted from a boat, and offered to leave if he could get a job. Detective-Sergeant Revell said that the defendant had no fixed abode. He had only recently been convicted of theft. 1 Mr. Luxford said that it was a bad case of theft.
